The Clothesline Project is a program that was started in 1990 in order to address the issue of violence against women. It is a vehicle for women affected by violence to expres their emotions by decorating a shirt. They then hang the shirt on a clothesline to be viewed by others as testimony to the problem of violence against women. With the support of many, The Clothesline Project has since spread worldwide. Across the globe oppression is being confronted, and real meaningful solutions are being fashioned through health care, education, and economic empowerment for women and girls. The linked problems of sex trafficking and forced prostitution, gender-based violence, and maternal mortality — which needlessly claim one woman every 90 seconds — present to us the single most vital opportunity of our time: the opportunity to make a change.

So, I still can’t believe its been over 3 weeks since our screening and discussion of Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. The amount of planning that went into the event was massive, but it was so worth it. Taylor and I have received many wonderful emails of appreciation from faculty, staff and students, and we are so proud of the event’s attendance. Over 100 students, faculty, staff, alumnae, parents and SND’s attended the screening and many stayed to participate in the discussion that followed. We are so excited to bring more of the Half the Sky Movement to Trinity!

A big thank you to everyone who helped us with this event: Our wonderful faculty advisors, Dr. Farnsworth and Dr. Piland. All the professors who not only came to the screening and contributed to the discussion, but also helped us promote; Dr. Thornjorbsen, Dr. Tomkin, Dr. Padgett, Dr. Sheridan, Professor Maisha Leek, Dr. Van Camp, Dr. Moayedi, Dr. Stocker, Dr. San Juan, and many more. Thanks to Ms. Ann Pauley and Mr. Timothy Russell for all their help, as well as the multiple Deans who encouraged their colleagues to attend. We could not have had such a successful event without EVERYONE’S support, and we are so grateful!

Here’s a picture of Taylor and I introducing the documentary. The event album can be viewed in its entirety on our facebook page: www.facebook.com/TrinityFeminists once you like it, so make sure you check it out!

I have no excuse for JUST getting around to blogging these photos-except that I am a senior. But, in my defense, pictures have been on the WSAC Facebook page for months.

So, on May 29th 2012, WSAC members joined Sister Mary Hayes, Sister Mary Ellen Dow, and Dr. Piland at the LCWR rally/march to show our support and appreciation for the sisters and the incredible work they have dedicated their lives to.

If you are not sure why we were rallying, I will briefly explain: The Leadership Conference of Women Religious(LCWR) is comprised of 320 religious orders and 1,500 members. On April 18, 2012, the Vatican criticized the LCWR because it had multiple doctrinal concerns. The Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith took issue with LCWR speeches, and publications that may have contained incorrect information about the Trinity. But mostly, they raised concerns about women’s ordination and the Church’s teaching on human sexuality. So, the Vatican decided to mandate a reform that would place the LCWR under the control of 3 United States Bishops.

We are a Catholic college for women, founded by the incredible Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. My education would not exist if it wasn’t for them, and I believed it was necessary to stand in solidarity with them. I trust the LCWR completely, and believe that THEY know what is best for them.

Here are a few pictures from the rally/march.

Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide was filmed in 10 countries, following Nicholas Kristof, Sheryl WuDunn, and celebrity activists America Ferrera, Diane Lane, Eva Mendes, Meg Ryan, Gabrielle Union and Olivia Wilde on a journey to tell the stories of inspiring, courageous individuals. All over the world women are seizing this opportunity. (Courtesy of PBS.org).
What is the Clothesline Project?

The Clothesline Project is a program that was started in 1990 in order to address the issue of violence against women. It is a vehicle for women affected by violence to expres their emotions by decorating a shirt. They then hang the shirt on a clothesline to be viewed by others as testimony to the problem of violence against women. With the support of many, The Clothesline Project has since spread worldwide.
