I am a member of the class of 2010 that graduated in May. This summer I went to Guatemala on a Human Rights Delegation, investigating Violence Against Women and advocating for change. We visited three separate indigenous villages, and countless grassroots organizations before visiting the US Embassy and meeting with the US Ambassador to Guatemala as well as members of USAID and the State Department. I also met with well know human rights leaders such as Jennifer Harbury and Norma Cruz.
I am an alumna from the Class of 2000. At Trinity, I wanted nothing more that a career that would take me abroad. After finishing my BA, and with the hopes of starting a global career, I went to The London School of Economics for graduate school, but found myself returning to the US thereafter. It took me almost ten years, but after beginning a career in higher education as an administrator (a career I never thought I would end up in!) I am finally working abroad in Singapore for a top global MBA program and looking forward to traveling around Asia for the next few years. My path wasn’t straightforward, and at times it felt daunting, but in the end I was able to reach my personal and professional goals. Trinity helped plant the seed.
My daughter name is Symone Johnson Class Of 2013. Symone has really worked hard, begining elementary and through out high school with honors. Symone was top ten of her high school class, and I can truly say all that hard work and effort has paid off.
Way to go Symone !!! continue to do a great job.
My name is Brittannie Muhammed class of 2012. I am originally from New Orleans, Louisiana and I was moved to the DC metro area because of Hurricane Katrina. Before I moved I didn’t really value my education as much as I should have and the result was me not getting the best of grades. After my families move I realized how important an education is to people everywhere else and all the benefits an education can grant, which in regards to the hurricane, has been a blessing in disguise. Had I not been forced to leave my comforting home in Louisiana, I wouldn’t be the much stronger and independent woman I am today. With the 5th year anniversary of the Hurricane just passing, I have realized that I appreciate much more of the world and what it provides for its students, I wouldn’t have gotten that without the terrifying certainty of Hurricane Katrina.
Over the past summer I participated in the SR. Seaton Cunneen Fellowship, at CentroNia Bilingual Public Charter School in Columbia Heights, where I learned more about myself and the community.
I hope to be able to pass on some of the life lessons to youth in the community and to show that there is nothing that can stand in anyone’s way, if you don’t give up, which is a lesson always taught but seldom learned (or taken into consideration).
My name is Ashley McCall-Washington. I graduated in December 2009 from the SPS program with a Masters in Communications. What would be your dream job? For some, it would be playing a sport, writing novels relaxing on the sands of Aruba. For some, it would be something that they enjoy doing on a day-to-day basis-like sending tweets to friends and writing a post on Facebook. Well, lucky for me-I get to do the latter. I am currently a Public Affairs Specialist/Blog Manager for the U.S. Army’s Online and Social Media Division. Not only do I have one of the coolest jobs in the world, I work in one of the coolest business offices in the world-the Pentagon…
My name is Kimberly Hallums and I am pursuing a Master of Arts in Communications (2012). For the past year and a half, I have donated my time to AmeriCorps, going to program conferences, while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. This year, I am currently serving as an assistant program coordinator at the Washington Middle School for Girls, a NativityMiguel school in Southeast. With the education I gained in undergrad and the advanced education I received here at Trinity, I have been called upon at my job to do several tasks, including writing a newsletter and assisting students with papers. With the little money I make in AmeriCorps, I help my mother out with bills (she has been out of for almost three years, due to the recession). Feel free to contact me for more info. Thanks!
Upon receiving my BS in Business Administration and minor in International Affairs just in August 2010 from Trinity’s SPS, I was notified a few weeks ago that I would be receiving an Excellence in Education Award from the Director of my agency, the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) on November 9, 2010! To my surprise, I immediately thought of the long road of being a single mom with 2 children and all the financial struggles and difficulty in balancing a full time career, kids, and life that never ceased with its ups and downs. I relied on a strong family and friend network, determination, and my faith in God that finally got me through. Now that I have completed the first level, I have initiated the start of pursuing my Masters degrees fall 2011 in international Affairs. I am even more motivated and feel empowered.
Tracy West is a single mother of three, who decided to pursue her college education two years ago. Under the guidance of Candice Washington, she enrolled at Trinity University (THEARC). In May 2010, she will be obtaining an Associates Degree and will further her studies on the Main Campus. Ms. West will be earning a Bachelor’s degree in Human Relations and a Master’s in Special Education. With her degree, she plans to continue working with special education students at the Arts of Technology Academy where she currently works. Ms. West prides herself in studying and continuing to excel each semester. Two of her daughters will be following in her footsteps in the Fall 2010. Ms. West is proud to be a student of Trinity University and plans to give back in the near future by teaching a course of two at Trinity’s southeast campus. She is also on the Dean’s List a well as Alpha Sigma Lambda.
I have received MEd in Reading in August 2005. Since then, I went to public school system to help improve the quality of reading instruction in Washington, DC area. I have worked as a Reading Specialist, Literacy Coach and DC CAS Test coordinator.
I am currently working as an Instructional Coach at Powell Elementary school supporting all teachers, students and parents in reaching their educational goals.
My name is Beatrice Peterson I am a junior (Red Class) CAS student pursuing a double Major in Political Science and Business Administration. I am in the Honors Program, and in the past I have worked for the AmeriCorps funded Heads up Program at Garfield Elementary, and Hart Middle, On Capitol Hill as a congressional intern, and for the Walter E Washington convention center as a HR intern. Over the summer I had the opportunity to write an Op-ed piece for The Washington Post Campus Progress, as well as being named the National Chairwoman of the College Democrats of America Black Caucus. And with the position I was given the opportunity to introduce myself as well as First Lady Michele Obama on a private call to the women of the DNC.
In my three years at Trinity I have been a student worker during Reunion Weekend, served on Residence Hall Council, and Campus ministry board, College Democrats executive board, and the NAACP executive board, becoming the president of the organization in 2009. And I have enjoyed every min of it. Coming from a high school that was a Science and Technology High school and was a male dominated field, Trinity gave me a departure from that experience. I have learned so much that will last me a life time. And the friends and traditions I have undergone has made my time here worthwhile.
My name is Shantae’ J. Elliott. I am a senior at Trinity University, to graduate this year on May 22nd, 2011. What a long road this has been, yet I feel like I have only begun with pursuing my education and career goals.
I currently work full-time for the Department of State, attend Trinity Full-time as a dedicated student and Vice President of Psi Chi, intern part-time at the Anne Arundel County Crisis Response and have a 4 year old daughter.
From an inkling, education has always been a high priority for me, and Trinity has helped me to embrace that even more. Academically, Trinity has aided in molding me as an excellent writer, mentor and has given me the confidence I need to be successful in my future career as a Forensic Psychologist.
Many of the professors have served as more than just a method of passing on their knowledge from the books, but as mentors passing on their knowledge of life and decision making as well. I give much credit to Trinity for supporting my hunger for education and wisdom.
In December 2010, I was accepted into the Chicago School of Professional Pyschology for their Master’s Program in Forensic Psychology and it was through not only my hard work and dedication, but the guidance and support of Trinity that helped me to achive that great milestone.
I am truly proud to be a Trinity Tiger, and every part of the woman I am will forever hold a place for Trinity within me.
My name is Anastasia Adams and I am an alumnae of Trinity University. I am a very recent graduate of May 2011.
Currently I am in my first semester of graduate school. I attend Eastern University in St. David’s PA, which is 20 minutes from Philadelphia. My program is a Master of Arts program in Counseling Psychology with a focus in community/clinical counseling. I love the beautiful and picturesque campus. There are lovely trees and many deer often graze on campus. The program in strengthening my knowledge in Psychology and I feel that I will be prepared for doctoral study.
Trinity has truly prepared me for this experience. While at Trinity I majored in Psychology and minored in Criminal Justice and Political Science. Trinity’s Psychology program challenged me and I feel ready for anything now. Professors like Dr. Harris-O’Brien, Dean Ocampo, Dr. Scott, Dr. Bishop, Dr. Rampolla, Dr. Gable and many others played a major role in my development. I would not be in a Master’s program today without the support of my professors during my Trinity experience.
My Trinity experience was deeply meaningful to me. I participated in College Democrats and campaigned for Barack Obama and helped students get registered to vote at Trinity. I was also involved in sports and NAACP. My senior year I was also blessed to participate in Student Government as Vice President and help develop a Big Sister/Little Sister Program. I also helped students stay connected about SGA events by utilizing twitter. I had one of my most meaningful experiences as Psychology Club President my junior year. As President I helped organize a forum for students to get advice from licensed Psychologists. And as a senior I reached my childhood goal of joining Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
Without Trinity and my Trinity sisters I would not be where I am today and I will be forever grateful that I chose Trinity for my undergraduate education.
hello, my name is robin thomas. i am a junior at trinity university. i moved to DC from PG, maryland a year ago. i just had a daughter oct. 30 2010. we moved into a transistional housing for women and children. its a homeless shelter that provides apartments within their facilty but they come with 9pm curfews and endless rules just to stay there. i was attending sanford brown to become a medical assistant. i just went to that school to quickly earn a certificate to get a good job. i really didn’t like the medical field after i graduated. my program director told me our credits transfer to Trinity. which is down the street from our house. so i just tried and now i am here. next year i will be a senior and im so glad i made that simple choice to just try and apply. i am on welfare and its so hard to be a full time mother and student but i am blessed that i am so close to my degree and i have my daughter by myside to show her that. just because we are on welfare and homeless that we do not have to stay that way. through consistentcy and faith, anything is possible. my daughter is only one. my life changed in one single year.
Attending the Graduate Community Counseling program at Trinity remains one of the best investments I’ve made in my own future. As a result, I have received advanced clinical training in the areas of expressive arts therapies and trauma-focused modalities. These professional stepping stones have enabled me to earn the prestigious, international credential of Registered Play Therapist Supervisor. Rumor has it that I am the first African-American mental health clinician to earn the RPT-S in Washington, DC. I am also a licensed mental health counselor in D.C. and Maryland. My passion for providing quality mental health services to urban children and their families inspired me to pioneer the first of its kind community-based play therapy organization, Urban Playology. I could not be more excited to return back to Trinity as an Adjunct Professor in the Graduate School Counseling Program this semester. The Welcome Back I have received has been very warm. It’s great to be back home!
